Welcome to Students for a Free TIBET Japan

2008/5/6 Rally and demonstration in Tokyo during Hu Jintao's state visit to Japan
We welcome all those who love peace, democracy and know the importance of human rights. We want to make the demonstration on 5/6 as large as possible, so invite your friends. While SFT is participating in this event, it is organized and hosted by the Save Tibet Network and TSNJ.
Details about the rally and demonstration can be found on TSNJ's English website: http://www.geocities.jp/t_s_n_j/doc/20080322-Demo-en.html
[ Important ] 2008/4/26 - About SFT's action
The fact that the Tibetans themselves want to express themselves in a way that is non-violent, peaceful, legal, and within the framework of Japanese law, has become our highest priority. For this reason the way that the roadside appeal during the Olympic torch relay will be carried out has been changed (We are not finished with talks with the police and public administration, so none of this is set in stone). SFT's role in this appeal was limited to those Tibetans who applied before hand. There is not any general participation open for the torch relay. For further information, please see the blog.
2008/4/26 Beijing Olympics Torch Relay Appeal
1) Tibetan Cultural Exchange: Getting to know the "Tibet problem"
- Date: April 25th, 2008 from 7PM

Outside Tibet, second and third generation refugees are being born. Visiting Nagano is Tsering Dorjee who lives and works in Japan is one of the generation of "Tibetan refugees who has never seen his home". Tsering is one of people that make up Japanese society and really is just the guy next door. The Tibet problem really isn't very far away. Tsering will be speaking about his experiences, how the currently displaced generation feel, and their hopes for the future. Please come and take this opportunity to get to know about Tibetan problem.

2) Beijing Olympics Protest: To the Chinese Government - Keep your promises!
- Date: April 26th, 2008 (Time and gathering place are still being decided)
- Place: In front of the JR Nagano Station (waiting on approval)
- Purpose: The reason China lost out to Sydney for the the 2004 Summer Olympics was due to the human rights problems starting with Tibet. After this, in the bid for the Summer 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing, the Chinese government pledged "an improvement in the human rights situation". SFT Japan has been paying close attention to the Beijing Olympics as the worlds eyes and ears are focused on the human rights situation in China. It presents an excellent opportunity for improving human rights in Tibet. Unfortunately nothing has improved and the Olympic venue is being forced forwards through strong governmental pressure. SFT does not oppose the Olympics and has no plans to disrupt the Olympic torch. SFT is, however, strongly concerned that in the shadow of the event that uses the phrase "A Celebration of Peace", promises have not been kept and the Tibet problem is still left unanswered.
- Participation: This event is for Tibetans living in Japan who have applied. (Tibet supporters and others are free to act as they wish. Please enjoy the event as a normal spectator).
3) Hear Tibet! Meeting (tentative title)
An appeal meeting after the torch relay has ended
- Time/Date: 2008/04/26 (PM, still working on the time)
- Place: Nagano city (tbd)
- Participation: Open (no registaration needed)
- Due to Nagano prefecture governmental ordinances, all those who have gathered to appeal the Tibetan problem are not allowed to gather into a single place. Instead, we will get together afterward to socialize (waiting for permission).
- There are not plans for a demonstration. Through (SFTJ) Tsering's speech, the message of Tibet support groups, Tibetan songs, etc. we will be reiterating our feelings and commitment to peace for Tibet.

Protest in front of the Chinese Embassy - March 8, 2008
The Chinese government has promised to improve its human rights situation
to host the 2008 Olympics, and the event that is supposed to celebrate
diverse ethnic cultures is about to be held in a few months.
However, the actual situation in Tibet has not changed at all. The world
turns a blind eye to Tibet where our ethnic pride has been violated, to
allow China to hold this worldwide event. As a Tibetan, I can not just
remin silent and accept this situation.
This will be the first protest by Tibetans in front of the Chinese Embassy in Japan, since March 10, 1959 when His Holiness the Dalai Lama was forced to exile from Tibet.
This will be a non-violent, peaceful protest which abides by the Japanese law. We obtained a permission from the local police station for this activity. Your understanding. support, and participation will be most welcome!
- Date/time: March 8, 2008, 11:00 AM
- Place: In front of the Chinese Embassy (3-4-33 MOTO-AZABU, MINATO-KU, TOKYO)
- How to protest: Protest without loud speakers and the like, display a banner, read aloud our statement. We will pay close attention not to disturb residents and the traffic in the area.
